OUR PHYSICS, OPTICAL ENGINEERING, AND NANOENGINEERING PROGRAMS PUT STUDENTS AT THE LEADING EDGE OF PHOTONICS, MICROELECTRONICS, AND NANOTECHNOLOGY. STUDENTS EXPLORE TECHNOLOGIES AND APPLICATIONS RANGING FROM FIBER OPTICS AND SILICON PHOTONICS TO SEMICONDUCTOR MANUFACTURING, QUANTUM ELECTRONICS, AND ADVANCED SENSING.
Jump light years ahead
As a major in Physics, Optical Engineering, or NanoEngineering, you'll receive unparalleled opportunities.
The NanoEngineering students work in our state-of-the-art Micro- Nanoscale Devices and Systems (MiNDS) cleanroom – which is usually reserved for graduate-level students at other institutions – starting year one, eventually working on semiconductor devices fabrication and testing.
The Optical Engineering students can boast to be holders of one of the nation's first Optical Engineering degrees; we were training optical engineers before anyone knew we needed them. We prepare our students in a variety of specialized fields, including laser systems, fiber optics, imaging and image processing, and silicon photonics.
The Physics major specifically requires students to participate in multiple one-on-one directed study opportunities throughout their years at Rose – including access to our Oakley Observatory, one of the finest undergrad observatories in the country – allowing them to get unique hands-on experiences and preparing them for a variety of careers after college.
