Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology’s Fowler Academic Building has earned a Citation Award for sustainable design excellence from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Indiana Committee on the Environment.

The 70,000-square-foot academic building, designed by Indianapolis-based RATIO Design, was recognized in the New Construction – Project Cost Greater Than $5 Million category as part of the inaugural AIA Indiana Committee on the Environment (COTE) Design Awards. 

The awards recognize projects demonstrating excellence in sustainable design and alignment with the AIA Framework for Design Excellence. The Fowler Academic Building was cited by the awards jury for its innovative approach to reducing energy use and its thoughtful use of glass and shading to bring natural light into the building.

Opened in 2021, the Fowler Academic Building combines state-of-the-art science and engineering spaces with design features supporting student health and well-being. In 2022, it became Indiana’s first WELL-certified facility, and incorporates daylighting, flexible learning environments, and collaborative spaces throughout the three-story building.

The recognition complements Rose-Hulman’s ongoing commitment to infuse sustainability into the Institute’s education and culture, a key theme of its Advancing by Design strategic plan.
