Rose-Hulman invites high school students to a day of fun-filled math activities during the annual Sonia Math Day on March 21.
Mathematically-interested students are invited to let their curiosity shine during Rose-Hulman's Sonia Math Day event on Saturday, March 21. This event is free and open to all students currently enrolled in a high school-level math class, offering a golden opportunity to discover the creativity embedded in the mathematical world.
Rose-Hulman faculty and students from the Department of Mathematics and the collegiate chapter of the Association for Women in Mathematics will lead students through a day of fun activities in Olin Hall on campus from 9 a.m. to 3:15 p.m.
Participants who register before Friday, March 13 are guaranteed a commemorative event t-shirt, but registration will remain open until Tuesday, March 17, or when capacity is reached. Register online at rhit.edu/soniamath.
This year's theme is "How It's Done," and will explore mathematics as art, strategy, and puzzles. Planned activities include creating customized t-shirts from algorithms, transforming a piece of paper into a hexagonal puzzle, and solving a graph theory strategy game to help a determined hunter save the day. Lunch will be provided.
Honoring the legacy of Sonia Kovalevsky, the first woman in Europe to earn a doctorate in mathematics, Sonia Math Days have been celebrated at colleges and universities for over twenty years and now inspire students to embrace mathematics as innovators fearless and undefined.
Parents and students with questions about the event can contact Associate Professor of Mathematics Tracy Weyand, PhD, at weyand@rose-hulman.edu.
