Four civil engineering students were recognized at the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Indiana Section meeting for their outstanding service to the Rose-Hulman Cecil T. Lobo student chapter of ASCE. The students were Georgia Hoffbeck, Meropi Gkiouzelopoulou, Alexis Willour, and Brianna Brunk.

Each year, the faculty select a group of students to be recognized at the section meting for their outstanding contributions to the student chapter on the Rose-Hulman campus. This group was chosen for “going above and beyond” with activities such as bringing in industry speakers to campus and participating in community service projects, said Matt Lovell, PhD, Chief Director of Institutional Research, Planning and Assessment and Professor of Civil & Environmental Engineering.

“They are exceptional students and it’s an honor to recognize our strong and dedicated students,” Lovell said.

All four recipients served as an officer in the ASCE student chapter at least once.

Gkiouzelopoulou is the former chapter president and a senior graduating with a degree in civil engineering, and is pursuing her master’s degree in structural engineering as part of the Rose Squared program. She and her fellow chapter members worked on the construction of two wheelchair access ramps connected to two houses where kids with disabilities lived. She also worked on the Terre Haute Tribune-Star’s Christmas basket fundraiser and was part of a group of students that helped survey a Vigo County school property.

“Working with so many people and on so many different projects and seeing happy faces and afterwards was such a big takeaway for me,” Gkiouzelopoulou said.

She also admits that taking what she learned in the classroom and applying it to real life situations was a big takeaway from her time at Rose-Hulman and as part of the ASCE student organization.
